A perfumer from healthcare who founded Pictura Fragrans in 2023 to make perfumes that work like paintings.

The story

DL (Douglas) Jenkins comes from healthcare: his background and training are as a physician assistant (PA), and he also holds a board certification in lifestyle medicine. His interest in olfactory therapy and emotional wellbeing led him to found Pictura Fragrans in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, in 2023. In 2025 he was a finalist at the Mouillette d'Argent, the international perfumery competition held in Barcelona.

The work

Each Pictura Fragrans extrait starts from a story, a myth or a painting, drawing on mythology, nature and psychology, and combines natural materials with synthetics. The 2024 releases include Le Réveil, Surinam Vert, Quetzalcoatl and Van Gogh's Irises; The Serpent's Orchard followed in 2025. The style is bold and often animalic or earthy: Kopi Luwak pairs coffee with civet. The name itself is Latin: pictura, painting, and fragrans, fragrant.
