Mathew Schmuelian

A collector of natural perfumery who started macerating his own materials and turned it into Lost Tribe, an all-natural house in New York.

The story

Mathew Schmuelian began by collecting artisanal naturals, musk, oud and ambergris, then moved on to sourcing raw materials and macerating animalic tinctures himself. The first perfume, "Hope You Like It", was made in a tiny run and became the start of Lost Tribe, founded in New York in 2022 with the mission of teaching people about natural fragrance.

The work

Lost Tribe uses only natural materials, in small batches, and favourites return in new versions. Among the best known are Lola's Lemonana, Past & Present and Pan's Labyrinth; Pan's Labyrinth and Dark Shadows were developed with Rajesh Balkrishnan. He also composes for Folkwinds (Poison Ivy) and Jinx, and for Vivace (Desert to Downtown, 2026).

Parfumo credits him with 120 perfumes and an average of 8.1/10: Past & Present 8.8, Poison Ivy 8.8, Pan's Labyrinth 8.7 and Lola's Lemonana 8.4. Fragrantica lists 50.
