Saruj Tangtaratorn
Siam1928
A Thai perfumer who turned desserts into perfumes you wear rather than eat, and later trained at ISIPCA.
The story
Saruj Tangtaratorn describes himself as self-taught. He worked at PerfumersWorld, a small perfume house in Thailand, then went independent, spending about three years creating personalised perfumes for private clients and brands. He later enrolled at ISIPCA, the French perfumery school in Versailles. His name is sometimes spelled Sanruj.
The work
Around 2016 he began Café de Parfum with its owner, Chaiyoot Chulphongsathorn. Its first collection (2018) turns six desserts into perfumes that are deliberately not gourmand: Les Fleurs Rouges (Turkish delight), Rustic Dawn (apple pie), Eden (fruit tart), Ashura (Noah's pudding), Black Addiction (brownie) and Grim Fantasia (Black Forest cake). In his words, the aim is to make edible things more wearable, the way a designer can make a dress inspired by a cupcake that does not look like one. He has since composed for Proad, Tada Parfumeur (Hypnotised, 2022) and Velvétail.
On Parfumo & Fragrantica
Fragrantica lists 12 of his perfumes.
At Scentorium
Dhatarattha Raja, guardian of the east, one of the Four Heavenly Kings extraits by four Thai perfumers for Siam1928 (2025), each limited to 150 porcelain bottles. In Buddhist tradition the Four Heavenly Kings guard the four directions: Dhatarattha the east, Virulhaka the south, Virupaksha the west and Kubera (Vessavana) the north. Café de Parfum is the place to explore his dessert-inspired work.
